The Project: “ African
Women Network for Peace”
During the Italy-Africa meeting some women from Rwanda, South
Africa and Sudan met in Rome, the capital of Italy.
On this occasion, they expressed the desire to be helped to create
an “African Women’s NETWORK” in Africa in order
to join forces to face their numerous common challenges, including
professional training, access to the labour market, peace, and
the social, political and economic instability that currently
exist in many of the countries where they live.
The Co-ordination for Distance Support, La Gabbianella, as well
as 13 partner associations in this sector, answered their call
and, after a short while, the African Women NETWORK for Peace
was founded.
At the same time, a NETWORK of African Women for Peace, having
those same targets, is being developed in Italy amongst the African
immigrant women and will co-operate closely with the African Network.
Together to meet the challenges!
Today, women living in various African countries1 joined the African
Women NETWORK for Peace, each of them accepting to act as a co-ordinator
for the women and associations operating in their respective region.
The main targets of the NETWORK are:
- Opening, in each country, a HOUSE of African Women for Peace,
which will operate as a national reference point and as an international
and African connection;
- Carrying out literacy and training courses in order to facilitate
women’s access to the labour market;
- Supporting and developing economic activities in order to
facilitate women’s independence;
- Collecting and disseminating important news and experiences
of their activities, both within the NETWORK and outside it,
above all thanks to contributions from associations operating
in this sector, including students and teachers, universities,
media professionals, etc.;
- Supporting occasions for sharing opinions and thinking about
issues like the protection of women’s rights, the value
of solidarity, the promotion of long-lasting peace and the sustainable
development of Africa.
